Paramount Pictures will produce animated movies. The first animated film will come out in 2014

Paramount Pictures Corporation, which belongs to Viacom media conglomerate, will create an animated film subdivision. The company’s first animated films will appear in 2014.

Brad Alan Grey, Paramount Chairman and CEO, announced that initially Paramount Animation plans to produce one film a year, spending up to $100 million per each. The special focus of the company will be directed at the production of family oriented movies.

By creating the animation unit Paramount will be able to enter the family movie market, produce and sell various consumer goods via Viacom and Nickelodeon. According to Grey, Paramount studio has planed the creation of the animation unit since 2005, when Grey obtained his present position in the company.

Grey said that they were really concerned about when to start the new unit. The current development of technologies made the creation of the animation subdivision possible.

The animation unit will make a potent rival to DreamWorks animation studio based in California, whose films are currently distributed by Paramount Pictures. The contract between the two companies expires by the end of 2012.
